Natural health experts believe that type II diabetes is a nutritional disease, when no other cause can be identified. In other words, incorrect nutritional intake over a period of many years leads to the metabolic disorder that is usually accompanied by a tendency towards obesity and high blood sugar levels.

Will a pill someday be able to prevent some of the most debilitating effects of aging, including cancer and diabetes. It is promising to think that accelerated aging, diabetes and cancer could one day be treated with this natural compound. As a drug, resveratrol may one day be used to treat fresh heart attacks and strokes, diabetes, as well as brain trauma.

Resveratrol has captured the attention of the world’s health and scientific communities since experiments from the Harvard laboratory of David Sinclair first appeared in the journal Nature in 2003. Resveratrol is the antioxidant compound in red wine that is currently hyped as the new “fountain of youth”.

Resveratrol is fast becoming one of the health buzz words of the decade. With studies now showing that resveratrol may well have significant effects on such cancers as prostate and ****** cancer, the news is good. But is there a link between resveratrol and diabetes as well?

According to recent studies of resveratrol and diabetes, there seems to be growing excitement about a potential breakthrough, so what is this all about? We have known for a long time the powers of this super nutrient in stopping cancer and increasing life expectancy, but according to the latest research, an imminent breakthrough is predicted for type 2 diabetes.

One of the latest resveratrol and diabetes studies has to do with a novel function. One of the things that occur in type II diabetics is that amylin, a protein peptide that is released by pancreatic cells along with insulin, begins to form hard fibrils within the cells. These fibrils eventually kill the cell.  Resveratrol inhibits the formation of these fibrils, according to a recent study.

It truly has some remarkable positive health effects for all of us without any resveratrol side effects that are negative. Even better if you want to get the ultimate benefit of it take it in a combined supplement that includes other health promoting ingredients like the one I take which has over 70 ingredients that comprise of products like decaffeinated green tea and turmeric, to name a few.

Resveratrol has been making the news a lot recently. Even the ABCNews show did a special on resveratrol and it’s affects on prolonging life. See the show here.

Having said that, with quite a few companies offering the Resveratrol products, which one do you choose for yourself? This article will help you decide which products you should be looking

for and help you find the best one to suit your individual needs.

Firstly, let’s look at what this little red wine ingredient can actually do.

Scientists report it can not only help you live longer, but can help prevent heart disease and lower your cholesterol levels. Tests are underway at present to see what other benefits

Resveratrol can have, like with helping Diabetes, stress relief, skin texture, skin diseases, mental alertness and much more.

The ingredient itself comes from red wine which could account for why French people have a longer life expectancy than USA folks. However, to get the full benefit of resveratrol you would need to drink a lot of red wine which of course would lead to alchohol problems! Please understand I am not suggesting the French drink too much red wine, but they do drink it on a regular basis and for a lifetime, so we have a lot of catching up to do.

Resveratrol is also found in blueberries, peanuts and the Japanese plant Knotweed. In fact, the Japanese have been using it as a healing tool for many years.

Resveratrol needs to reach your bloodstream fast in order to maximise it’s benefits, and unfortunately drinking red wine alone only allows a small percentage to get through.

Scientists and experts alike agree that to get the best out of resveratrol it should be taken as a supplement with other nutrients

Putting other nutrients together with resveratrol allows them all to integrate with each other and give maximum benefits to all who take them.

Tests have shown that putting resveratrol together with ingredients such as Acai, Goji, Noni and Pomegranate will enhance the effects of resveratrol more and increase it’s powerful

effects on the body.

Finding a Resveratrol product with these extra ingredients in is not easy, but do your research and you will discover products out there. some will even contain aloe Vera and Ginseng which will also give your body added health benefits like mental alertness and relieve stress.

Importantly, do your research and maybe test a few different products out to find one that your body prefers.

Get the Scoop on Resveratrol and Anti-aging

What I want to talk about is anti-aging. There is a reason anti-aging and weight loss are billion dollar industries. I know I want to stay young inside and out. I am terrified of aging to tell you the truth. Because of this I stay on top of the latest research available. I also stay on top of the best products available on the market that address anti-aging and weightloss issues. I have found some substantial research on the following product and am currently using it myself. I am very pleased.

It is clearly out that resveratrol is the new miracle ingredient for anti-aging, anti-cancer, and prevention of Obesity. Why? Well Resveratrol comes from the skin of grapes. It is found in red wine but in red wine very little is prevelent. Not near enough to produce major results. But in large quantities resveratrol has been linked to weight loss, health, and anti-aging. This according to Harvard research. Follow this link to read the research results for yourself. Official Harvard Study Results on Resveratrol and Anti-aging.

In fact, Dr.Sinclair has found resveratrol to be the only known natural ingredient to effect the gene related to aging. No other ingredient before has been able to show changes in the aging gene.

Now, Barbara Walters, Oprah, Dr.Oz and more are talking about this wonder ingredient found in the skin of grapes. But there is more, anti-oxidents from all super foods are crucial to health and wellness, anti-aging, and the fighting of disease. NFI consumer products has been ahead of its time on the research of resveratrol and other anti-oxidents. They have just released a product called Vital Fruits which contains the miracle ingredient in a liquid form. Along with 20 other anti-oxidents found in the worlds greatest super fruits.

What I like about this product is its tested ORAC value in 4000. There is no product on the market that even comes close to matching that. ORAC is an actual measurment used to determine how much of the ingredient is actually contained in the product.

One bottle of this stuff lasts a month. I take a one ounce shot in the morning and at night. You have to keep replentishing your bodies supply of anti-oxidents because the body can not produce them itself. You can not buy Vital Fruits in stores. This product is starting to emerge as a weight loss leader as well. So how can you live without an anti-aging, weight loss, oxident fighting supplament? You can, but not near as well as someone on this daily regiment. Those that are on it are experiencing more energy and more stabilized moods. This is what it does for me so I am sure it can do the same for you. I am young now but would like to stay that way as long as possible. Anything I can do to stall my bodies aging process I will try!

One 1 Ounce Shot of Vital Fruits™ Offers, Multiple sources of antioxidants that remove free radicals in your body. The most powerful ORAC blend available. Cardiovascular support. Immune system boosting Anti-aging properties.

What exactly is “Resveratrol”. According the the defenition on Wikepedia “Resveratrol is a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. Resveratrol has also been produced by chemical synthesis[1] and is sold as a nutritional supplement derived primarily from Japanese knotweed. Resveratrol has been shown at times to extend the life span of yeast and mice.[2] In mouse and rat experiments, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-lowering, chelating and other beneficial cardiovascular effects of resveratrol have been reported. Most of these results have yet to be replicated in humans. In the only positive human trial, extremely high doses (3–5 g) of resveratrol in a special proprietary formulation have been necessary to significantly lower blood sugar.[3] Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a constituent of red wine, but apparently not in sufficient amounts to explain the “French paradox” that the incidence of coronary heart disease is relatively low in southern France despite high dietary intake of saturated fats.”

Vital Fruits™ is the first super antioxidant blend of its kind ,Vital Fruits™ is the first liquid available that will combine the extracts of over 20 antioxidant rich extracts from berries and fruit from around the world,Vital Fruits™ launches 1 November 2008 ,Vital Fruits™ is to be available through the Emugenix© network. Vital Fruits™ main benefit to consumers is the antioxidant capacity to neutralize free radicals. Resveratrol found in grapes and peanuts is thought to be the explanation of the French Paradox which is French people have lower incidences of heart disease despite consuming a diet rich in saturated fats. Vital Fruits™ is formulated with 100 mg of resveratrol in every one ounce shot. Vitamin C from Indian Gooseberry, bilberry, Acai, Mangosteen, Goji Berry, Barbados Cherry, Tart Cherry, chokeberry, and strawberry extract. Quercetin from red grapes. Proanthocyanidins from Chokeberry and Acai. Ellagic acid from red raspberries. Zeaxanthin from Wolfberries (Goji) which is absorbed by the retina. Epicatechin from tart cherry, Barbados cherry, bilberry, and blueberry extracts.

Vital Fruits™ is the antioxidant booster to help reach optimal daily ORAC values. Oxygen Radical Absorbing Capacity or ORAC is a scientific measure of the antioxidant capacity of foods.

What can a resveratrol pill really do for you? The supplement is being promoted as an anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar lowering, life extending miracle. But, what they fail to tell you is that the latest research proves that the nutrient has a very low bio-availability.

Stomach acid converts the active form of the nutrient to an inactive form that does not have the same activity. Basically, it causes twisting of the molecule. If it remains unchanged as it passes through the stomach, the untwisted molecule is small enough to pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream directly. This occurs with some proteins and other nutrients, as well.

In order to protect delicate nutrients from stomach acid, some manufacturers use an enteric coating. But, the coatings are more expensive and the cheap supplements don’t include them. So, the first thing that a resveratrol pill must include is an enteric coating.

The second thing is that the formulation should be standardized to have high trans-resveratrol content, 50% is best. It is the trans-resveratrol type that has been used in laboratory studies. It is basically the “untwisted” form of the molecule.

The third thing to look for is a combination of other ingredients that enhance and work with the trans-resveratrol to provide the greatest results. On its own a resveratrol pill can only do so much. The activity that it has is not well understood, but assuming that the research theories are correct, it is not active against all types of free radicals. Basic antioxidants must be included or the other free radicals will damage the cells, even if trans-resveratrol is present.

Some of the latest claims have been about weight loss, in particular fat loss, that supplementation can cause. These claims are based on studies conducted using animal models. There are no clinical trials to show the effectiveness or safety of this type of supplement for weight loss.

If you need to lose weight, a multi-nutritional supplement that contains chromium, green tea extract, gingko biloba, SAM-e and ATP can help, because they are compounds that have proven fat-burning activity. Other nutrients are important, as well. Just because you are overweight does not mean that you are well nourished. In fact, in all likelihood, you are suffering from mal-absorption, an inability to absorb nutrients from the foods that you eat. Supplementation can be highly beneficial.

Basically, a single-ingredient resveratrol pill will do very little to improve your overall health. As an ingredient in a totally balanced formula, it’s great. Alone, it’s not going to do much.

It was believed to be the solution to the puzzle of the French paradox, a lower than expected incidence of heart disease in the South of France, despite a diet that is high in fat. Researchers have since proven that it could not possibly be the explanation for that puzzle. The amount that is present in red wine is too low.

The amount that is present in a resveratrol pill may be too high or too low. 20-50mg per day is sufficient, higher than that could cause unwanted side effects. Look for a formula that includes that amount and lots of other different ingredients, if you want the best results.

If you’re interested in the cancer cure/resveratrol link there’s good news. Science is on the way to showing the beneficial effects on cancer. But don’t wait 10 or more years to try it for yourself, take the worlds best nutritional supplements with 32 mg of resveratrol per tablet.

It is not only the Resveratrol and prostate cancer link which is cause all the excitement but many others too such as helping with Alzheimer’s and diabetes. All this is especially great news for men, that we can potentially fight off this increasingly common disease.

Research suggests resveratrol not only reaches its intended target, injuring the nexus of malignant cells, but at the same time protects normal tissue from the harmful effects of radiation. Yes, you have a double therapeutic gain as it makes tumor cells more sensitive to radiation, and makes normal tissue less sensitive!

One study concerning Resveratrol prostate cancer treatment and prevention combined the antioxidant with other phytochemicals found in the skins of muscadine grapes. They called it muscadine grape skin extract or MSKE for short.

Muscadines (Vitis rotundifolia), are a particular grapevine species native to the present-day southeastern United States that have been cultivated extensively since the 16th Century.

Muscadine grape vines are largely immune to fungus, nematodes and bacteria and insects rarely cause any damage. Resveratrol from muscadine grapes is widely believed to cure prostate cancer. Resveratrol has many healing properties and Muscadine grapes, where it is found in abundance, were used in laboratory tests.

The antioxidant properties of the muscadine grapes have now come to the fore. It is perhaps the best fruit made available to humans for protection against a dozen ailments.

In addition, there are a group of nutrients that work in “synergy” with resveratrol to provide the greatest anti-cancer effects. These same anti-cancer affects can help protect the body from heart disease and other life-threatening diseases, in which chronic inflammation plays a role.

You should also look for one that contains saw palmetto, lycopene, nettle root, zinc and red clover, both of which support the prostate’s health. In order to get the most from Resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention provided by it, be sure that the supplement has an enteric coating to protect it from stomach acid. Keep watching for more Resveratrol prostate cancer news and learn about other interesting phytochemicals.

For example, Resveratrol combines well with green tea extract among others, and it is this beneficial interaction or synergy that greatly amplifies its power to fight cancer, and many other diseases. Perhaps in the future, as we become more and more aware, we could help to eradicate this deadly disease by taking preventative steps, rather than looking for a cure.

Since the resveratrol and prostate cancer benefits are often not negligible with drinking red wine, it is recommended that a multi-vitamin supplement that contains this nutrient is the best way to consume it.

Resveratrol As Prostate Cancer Prevention

Cancers of all types are caused by free radicals, chronic inflammation and exposure to carcinogens. Normal cells become mutated and multiply spreading to the surrounding tissue and eventually forming a tumor.

You may have heard recently about Resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention in the media, as it is being tipped as a major force for the future in the fight against cancer. Resveratrol prostate cancer studies were initiated because it has unique antioxidant activity. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals.

This substance is found in the skin of certain red grapes. But don’t be too hasty. You could never drink enough wine for it to make a huge difference and so you need to look for another way to take it.

What this all means is that instead of drinking plenty of red wine everyday, take a multi-vitamin supplement that contains resveratrol. This is especially true for men over fifty. However, you do not need to wait until you are over fifty to begin taking a supplement that contains over seventy different vitamins and minerals.

Numerous studies have been conducted concerning Resveratrol and prostate cancer, as well as other forms of the disease. The results have all been encouraging. But to date, major health organizations will not confirm the Resveratrol prostate cancer prevention connection. It’s doubtful that they ever will. Alternative practitioners are already supporting the use of this and other natural antioxidants, not only to prevent cancers, but to treat them.

Resveratrol has other properties beneficial to us, including protection against heart disease and is a strong anti oxidant that helps reduce inflammation too. But it is the Resveratrol and prostate cancer link that is producing much excitement.

If you want to learn more about Resveratrol and prostate cancer treatment, I suggest that you seek the advice of a doctor of naturopathic medicine. You should be able to find one in your area. If your goal is prevention, choose a good multi-nutritional supplement and take it every day.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, they say. Those of us who want to prevent life threatening diseases are doing all that we can in that direction. A healthy diet and regular physical activity are of utmost importance. No one will dispute that fact.

Finding a source for resveratrol from grape supplement is a good choice if you are trying to protect your health against many diseases. Health concerns like cancer, heart disease, obesity, Alzheimer’s, and type 2 diabetics all benefit from this nutrient.

Let’s just look at the benefits of resveratrol from grape supplement for diabetes. This is a disease that affects my extended family and a couple of friends of mine. My husband has Type 1 diabetes, so this information may not be as critical for him, but his brother and two of our closest friends have Type 2 so this information is beneficial for them.

It was discovered that resveratrol significantly lowered blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes. The dose given was 2.5 grams and 5 grams. Patients tested had no adverse reactions to this large amount. This study shows the use of resveratrol has great potential in treating Type 2 diabetes. More studies are being conducted to see if lesser amounts can benefit as well.

When tested on mice it kept the mice from gaining weight and from developing diabetes. Studies show it is possible that resveratrol may fight diabetes in two ways, by increasing metabolism, thus helping with obesity, and by improving insulin sensitivity.

These findings mean great health benefits for diabetics. They are also crucial for people in general with the increase in metabolism.

Since resveratrol comes from the skin of red grapes, drinking red wine is one way to get resveratrol, but too much wine is not good for one’s health. The best way to get the health benefits is with resveratrol from grape supplements. In supplement form you know exactly how much you are getting and you can get it everyday. You will find lots of tablets available.

The one I like to take has many other nutrients with it, including essential vitamins and minerals, ginkgo biloba, coenzyme Q10, and other important herbal extracts for optimum health. You save money by getting all the nutrients you need in one bottle, and you save shelf space not having to store bottles of each nutrient separately.

Check out my web site today. You can find lots of good information about staying healthy, and find more information on the resveratrol from grape supplements I take. Nutritional supplements are necessary to replace the vitamins and minerals that are depleted form our soil today, thus are food supply is less effective in delivering the nutrients we need to keep us healthy and ward off diseases.

Chemically, Resveratrol is a polyphenol that includes the flavanoids and proanthocyanadins, both very powerful antioxidants. These are very useful for the destruction of free radicals that threaten your health and well-being in this age of excessive pollution and vehicle emissions, and also excessive exposure to the harmful factors of sunlight through the erosion of the ozone layer that acts as a filter against these harmful free radical-inducing rays.

Biohemically it is a phytoalexin, a chemical used by a plant to protect against and destroy invaders. Each phytoalexin is specific to a particular invader, whether it is an insect, a bacterium or a fungus. They can take the form of terpenes, alkaloids or any other chemical that disrupt the cell walls of or otherwise destroy the enemy to the plant concerned.

Resveratrol is particularly well known for existing on the skins of red grapes, but can also be produced synthetically and marketed as a nutritional supplement. The so-called ‘French Paradox’ relates to the low incidence of coronary heart disease in Southern France in spite of the high saturated fat content of their diet. At least part of this is claimed to be due to the Resveratrol content of the red wine they drink, although the quantity even in a whole bottle is very small.

However, before considering the nutritional benefits of the extract, apart from red grape skins where else can resveratrol be found? Japanese knotweed is a bushy perennial plant, about 4 to 10 feet high, is a very rich source of resveratrol, and is the more important natural source of the two. Red grape skins hardly contain enough to be worthy of extracting. It is also present in minor quantities in pine nuts, peanuts and various other vines and grapes.

It has been under study for many years now for its effect on the heart and other parts of the body, and the antioxidant effect of resveratrol has been found to be unique. The effect of free radicals on the arteries is to help, along with cholesterol, to promote the thickening and hardening of the artery walls. Damage to the arteries by free radicals, and the resulting scar tissue, causes the production of even more free radicals and a vicious circle of damage and even more free radical production occurs.

The antioxidant action of resveratrol is in the enhancement of the nitric oxide content of the blood. Free radicals can reduce the levels of blood nitric oxide that in turn increases blood pressure. An increase in nitric oxide by appropriate antioxidants can help to reduce blood pressure closer to normal. Resveratrol is more effective in achieving this than any of the vitamin antioxidants, A, C or E. It does so by opening up the arteries and reducing the resistance to blood flow through them. .

It also helps to prevent blood cells from sticking together and forming clots that can lead to serious cardiovascular problems, and has been found by Canadian studies to be effective against a much wider range of chemicals that promote blood clotting than any other anti-clotting components of wine. In fact it has now been established, and more or less confirmed by the medical profession, that drinking red wine significantly reduces the effects of cardiovascular disease and can even go a long way towards curing it. Napa Valley here we come!

Inflammation is a condition that is caused by the immune system of the body, the purpose of which is to protect us against foreign invaders. However, once inflammation starts, it triggers even further immune responses itself, that if not controlled can lead to extremely painful and sometimes very serious conditions, even after the major trigger for the initial immune response has been dealt with.

Inflammation is regulated by chemicals known as cytokines, the master of which is NF Kappa B that controls all other cytokines. NF Kapa B also controls the activity of cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) essential for that part of the immune system that causes inflammation.

COX-2 is an enzyme that increases the production of Postaglandin E-2 (PGE-2) that is an essential trigger for T-cells that attack perceived foreign cells. If PGE-2 is suppressed, then the T-cells will not be activated. This is an essential part of reducing unwanted inflammation. However, it can be dangerous to suppress molecules below NF Kappa B such as COX-2 or PGE-2. VIOXX is a prime example of the type of heart problems that can occur if you try that type of inhibition, and Celebrex is another.

The beauty of resveratrol is that, although advertised and claimed to control COX-2 and Prostoglandin E-2, it does so by suppressing the action of NF Kapa B, the ‘supreme controller’ of the inflammatory war.

Finally, there is also some evidence that resveratrol can have an effect on aging. It is well known that powerful anti-oxidants can help to protect against the cell destruction that free radicals can cause, and so help to protect the body against the aging effect of this cell destruction. However, there is another way in which resveratrol might contribute to us all looking more youthful in future (though for many of us it is a bit too late!).

Sirtuins (silent information regulator proteins) are enzymes that are known to promote the survival of cells through adverse conditions, such as SIRT 1 that protects against premature aging by suppressing the destruction of damaged cells long enough for them to be repaired. Plant polyphenols such as resveratrol are though to be able to activate sirtuins with the possibility of lengthening life by slowing natural cell destruction, and have also been shown to be able to slow aging by activating sirtuins to mimic the benefits of calorie restriction.

There is still a lot of research and work required on resveratrol, but the signs are evident that this is a possibility in the future for extending the average lifespan of human beings by a significant amount. In the case of yeast it has been demonstrated to be as much as 80%.

Translated to you or I that would mean us living to about 140 years old – if we want it!

The total benefits of resveratrol are yet to be uncovered.  We have known for years that the antioxidant decreases our risk of cancer and heart disease, if it is taken in a bio-active form called trans-resveratrol, which can be absorbed through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream.  Of course, if you buy cheap supplements or the wrong red wine, you are not likely to get the benefit.

The resveratrol-content of red wine varies, depending on where the grapes grew and how long the grapes were allowed to ferment with the skins still intact.  It is the skin of certain types of red grapes that contain the largest amount and that amount increases as the grapes are allowed to ferment.  Red grape juice is not a good source of the antioxidant, because it is not fermented.

To a lesser extent, the antioxidant is present in boiled peanuts, but raw ones have only a tiny amount.  It also occurs in large amounts in some medicinal plants, such as Japanese knotweed root.   The purpose of the antioxidant in the plant world is to protect it from disease, toxins and UV radiation from the sun.

Most healthcare experts recommend a good supplement, rather than a dietary source, because the resveratrol-concentration is more uniform and there is no risk of liver damage or alcohol abuse that can occur among red wine drinkers.

Of course, in order to determine the potency, a manufacture must test the raw ingredients.  The best manufacturer guarantees that 50mg of their extract will contain 50% trans-resveratrol.  If you do a little shopping around, you will see that most manufacturers neither list the amount or the potency.  If they do, you usually get a 25% trans-resveratrol concentration, which is not likely to be of any benefit.

But, let’s get to what those benefits are.  It is obviously very exciting, because it has researchers from around the world conducting studies.  Here are some of the things that they’ve been saying.

• May help prevent colon, breast, stomach, throat and other types of cancer

• Increases insulin sensitivity, decreases unhealthy blood sugar levels, but does not cause     low blood sugar levels

• Extends the lifespan of short-lived fish

• Reduces inflammation, improves bone density, slows bone degeneration and may reduce the risk of head and neck cancer

• May be useful in treating antibiotic resistant infections

• Protects against the damaging affects of UV radiation (may prove beneficial for cancer patients requiring radiation therapy)

• Helps prevent heart disease

With all of this good news, there is a little bad news about the supplement industry.  In November, 2007, an independent laboratory tested 13 resveratrol supplements to determine if the potency listed on the label was accurate.  Only two  passed the test, but this supports the notion that you need to choose your supplements carefully.

Here’s my advice.  Your best choice for supplementation is one that contains resveratrol, carnosine, SAM-e and your basic vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  If you tried to take these supplements individually, you would spend a lot more money and get only limited benefit.   See my website for more specific advice. -Thanks, Larry
